How fast should I be breathing?

In a healing session, whether it’s a recording or a live session, I’ll always set a speed/tempo for you.  Please know this is offered as a guideline, and to always follow your intuition and take it at your own pace.  You’re the one in control and at any time can slow down or speed up the rhythm.  The most important thing is that you keep breathing and listening to your body above all.

I feel lightheaded during breathwork. Will I pass out?

In this breathing technique, we’re not holding our breath or going so fast that we hyperventilate.   It’s perfectly normal to feel lightheaded, especially for the first few minutes.  You’re taking in more oxygen than your body is used to, so trust that the body will regulate as it adjusts.  Remember that you’re lying down, so even if you lose consciousness for a brief moment, you are safe. When you come back, you’ll feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and so much more peaceful.  

I’ve tried Breathwork, but it made me anxious and I had a hard time relaxing. Is this normal? Why do I feel anxious?

I hear this one a lot!  Often times what happens is that someone will try the practice once, will feel anxious as soon as the body’s sensations start to kick in, and will stop.  Before writing off breathwork, I invite you to consider that when we feel anxious, it’s because we’re not fully present in the moment and are avoiding feeling whatever is at the root of our anxiety.  One of the reasons I love this practice so much is that it gives you a vehicle to unpack all of those buried emotions and confront them directly to heal on a conscious and subconscious level. 

During breathwork, the sensations in the body can start to set off the alarm in your mind transformational change is underway.  Our ego likes to keep us safe and inside our comfort zone.  The truth is that sometimes you have to get uncomfortable to change.  Breathwork can be confrontational and is the most effective when we decide to get out of the way and trust that our emotions are nothing to fear.   The question to ask here is “am I ready to heal what’s underneath my anxiety?” Am I ready to get outside of my comfort zone and try something new? 

Remember, love...What we resist, persists!  The invitation of breathwork is to deeply surrender and allow yourself to get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable and trust the divine intelligence of the body.  Keep breathing, and know your thinking mind will get on board. <3 

When I’m breathing I start crying and can’t keep up with the breath. What should I do?

Breathwork is all about opening up your heart and accessing your emotions.  This practice is designed to help facilitate emotional release, so by all means, cry!  Cry for as long as you need to move the energy up and out of your body.   There is so much healing medicine stored within our tears, so feel free to let it all out.  When you feel the energy start to shift, that’s when you can return to the breath.  All of the above also applies to screaming, laughing, and any urges to express that come through your voice.  Whether it’s rage or sadness or grief, it’s all welcome to come through.  Let it out!  It might take a few breathing sessions to empty out your tank, and that’s ok!  There’s no right or wrong way to experience this practice.  You’ll feel so much better afterward, I promise! <3 

During breathwork, I sometimes feel nauseous and a purging sensation. Is this normal?

Totally common!  This practice raises your vibration very quickly, and as your body adjusts to the new energetic state, it’s natural to experience the urge to purge.  This is beautiful and a sign that your body is releasing all of the lower vibrations and frequencies in your body such as fear, anxiety, grief, guilt, shame, rage, sadness, etc.  If you’re prone to feeling nauseous, I suggest not eating for at least an hour before practicing breathwork.  Trust that your body knows how to heal and is regulating itself.  

Why does my body vibrate, almost like it’s shaking?

During breathwork, you are waking up your energy almost instantly.  It’s very normal for your energy/life force to manifest as shaking or a vibrating sensation as it awakens.  Don’t ARE energy!  Everything is energy!  I like to think about this like electricity and encourage you to welcome the sensations as signs that you are alive.  Lean into the vibrations, and always know you can slow down the breath for a more gentle experience.  Don’t fight it...shake along with it!  Your nervous system is recalibrating.  How cool is that?

Can I do breathwork while pregnant?

Yes, you can do breathwork while pregnant.  I've worked with many clients throughout their conception, pregnancy, and post-partum journey without any cause for concern.  In fact, this can be an incredibly aligned way to connect to your baby on a deeper level. When pregnant, it is extra important to take the breath pattern at a pace that feels comfortable for you and as always, stay in consent with your body's needs.  

My hands get really stiff during breathwork. What’s going on?

This is super common and actually has a name, tetany.  When it manifests in the hands, it can feel like lobster claws and an intense cramping sensation.  The energetic meridians in your hands are directly connected to your heart, so this is a sign that your heart is trying to open.  All of the love you have in your heart is begging to be opened, but sometimes we try to hold on and control.  A great question to ask in this moment is, “where am I resisting giving/receiving love?” Then repeat the mantra, “It is now safe for me to trust love.”  The invitation is to surrender even more here to whatever emotions are coming forward.  Give your hands a shake and trust that the sensation will subside after the meditation.

How long should I be breathing?

A full-length healing session is about 30 minutes of active breath followed by 10-15 minutes of passive integration/rest.  You’re welcome to rest as long as you like afterward.  It’s important to never skip this step...this is the most important part!  Know you can experience the benefits of this practice after just 10-15 minutes.  I find a daily 5-10 minute practice is highly effective and fits nicely into full schedules. 

Can I do breathwork on my period?

Yes, you can participate in breathwork on your period.  However, for most folks, Day 1/2 is an extra sensitive time and the most powerful medicine is rest.  If you are called to do breathwork while menstruating, I suggest you modify the breath to a slower and more gentle pace.  Above all, this is about listening to your body first.

Are there any medical restrictions to practicing Breathwork?

Please consult your medical care practitioner prior to practicing breathwork if you experience any of the following: 
  • high blood pressure
  • cardio vascular disease
  • glaucoma
  • epilepsy
  • ulcers
  • aneurysms
  • detached retina
  • pregnancy
  • manic or bi-polar disorder
  • no hospitalization from any psychiatric disorders in last decade
  • schizophrenia
  • seizures or other brain conditions
  • use of blood thinners

Is Breathwork associated with a specific religion or spiritual belief?

We all breathe.  Breathwork belongs to all of us.  This practice is all about connecting with your higher self/higher power as you define it.  Breath is universal.  Breathwork is a type of pranayama yoga and originates in India.  

Is breathwork safe for children?

For most children, once they reach the age of 10 they’ve reached a stage of development where they have an awareness to receive the practice.  Children often only need to breathe for a few minutes to receive the full benefits.  I’ll always invite parents to be present during a session, as feels comfortable for the child. 

What happens if something comes up in breathwork that I can’t handle emotionally?

You are so seen and heard.  I’ll share from my personal experience that breathwork has taught me a level of self-trust and emotional stability I never thought was possible.  It’s helped to stabilize my moods by giving me a safe space to clear out some gnarly emotions like grief, anger, jealousy, betrayal, codependency, sexual abuse, etc.  If you are prone to mood swings, Breathwork can give you an outlet to move through what’s causing the volatility.  By metabolizing your emotions, you have a space to roll through them and release them from your nervous system.  

I believe that anyone who is drawn to this practice is capable of handling anything that comes up during a healing session.  That being said, it’s important to always have an emotional support system ready to hold space for you during and after a deep healing session.  Whether that’s a coach or therapist, I recommend checking in with them before and after.  If we’re working together 1:1, I’m always happy to provide resources and additional support.  My mental health has done a complete 180 since I started practicing breathwork, and I recommend it to anyone who is ready to dive deep into their healing.  

Breathwork pairs beautifully with traditional talk therapy, and if you’re currently seeing a therapist, I recommend consulting them prior to beginning your breathwork journey if you have any concerns.  


Where did you do your training?

I was first introduced to Breathwork by Madeline Giles in an Angelic Breath Healing Class.  I studied privately with Madeline for 1 year while completing training through the David Elliot lineage both with David and Erin Telford.  

I keep falling asleep during breathwork, is this normal?

Unless you’re extremely fatigued, what’s likely happening is there’s some resistance in your nervous system.  Our bodies have a funny way of shutting down when we’re subconsciously (or unconsciously) carrying fear around confronting things.  It’s an absolutely normal (fight, flight, freeze, rest) trauma response, and something you can gently work to overcome.  I’d advise setting the intention to stay awake and keep guiding yourself towards your emotional edge.  There might come a point when you begin to yawn and get fatigued, and that’s an invitation to lean in and go deeper with the breath.  Tune into the music and the sensations in your body.  A 1:1 session with a facilitator is recommended to keep you focused and present in your body.  You’re so close!  On the other side is an emotional breakthrough, and that’s where the magic happens!
